Sitting To Standing With A Walker. -Make sure your walker is facing you with the open side towards you. -Check that all four wheels are firmly on the ground. -Lean forward just slightly and use strength from your arms to help push yourself up. As you stand, be careful that you don’t pull up or tilt your walker.
Stand on the stronger (unaffected) leg. So, if your right leg is stronger, put your weight on that leg. Move the cane down to the next step below you. Then move the affected leg down to the step the cane is now balancing on. Last, step down with your stronger (unaffected) leg. Both legs and the cane should now all be on the same stair step. The safest method is facing up the stairs. The wheelchair user grabs one or both stair rails, leans forward enough to keep the casters from lifting off, lowers the rear wheels down one stair, then slides the hands down the rail. If the footrests interfere with smooth progression down the stairs and they can be removed, this may be done.
